Texas A&M’s on upset alert against FCS Nicholls State on Saturday night. Early in the fourth quarter, the Colonels were tied with the Aggies in College Station, 14-all. The Aggies pulled ahead with a touchdown with 7:34 left, but they’re not clear yet.
A&M had the worst Week 1 of pretty much anybody in college football. The Aggies blew a 34-point lead and lost on a fake-spike touchdown while the clock was stopped, so their fans were understandably livid about things. Those included a university regent who wrote in a heated Facebook post that he’d vote to fire coach Kevin Sumlin.
Let’s talk briefly about Nicholls, which is threatening.
Where is Nicholls State University?
It’s in Thibodaux, La.
Is Nicholls good at football?
Is Nicholls really bad at football?
Often. The Colonels are better than they were in 2014, when they went 0-12. And they’re still Division I, so it’s not like they’re the worst, but they’re not supposed to be competitive against power-conference (or even mid-major) teams from the FBS. This is a program that’s made three FCS playoff appearances in its history, which goes back to the 1970s. The Colonels were 5-6 last year. They haven’t breached .500 since 2007.
Is Nicholls the same team that almost beat Georgia in 2016?
How big an underdog is Nicholls in this game?
36.5 points. A win would be the fourth biggest upset ever by point spread, per ESPN, which is broadcasting the game.
Anything else I should know?
One of the stars of season 1 of Netflix’s Last Chance U is on the roster. Marcell Andry is a defensive lineman for the Colonels. Fellow LCU star Ronald Ollie was on the team last year, but he announced before this year he’d be transferring.
If Texas A&M loses, is Kevin Sumlin getting fired?
Not sure, but let me put it this way: He’s not not getting fired.
